It is then a journey back in time where a superb observatory allows you to discover the fossilized meander of the Yonne. On the other side there are rock cliffs whose stone was used to make the sidewalks of London. The route then goes through the undergrowth.

Hello and welcome to Varzy. The Haut Nivernais Val d'Yonne Community of Communes, in collaboration with the Scientific and Artistic Society of Clamecy, memory of local history, invites you to discover the historical and architectural heritage of Varzy, through this audio-guided tour.

The city, whose origins are very ancient, owes its name to the Var: a stream that has its source in the lower part of the city. During the Gallo-Roman era, Varciacum belonged to the parents of Saint Germain, 6th bishop of Auxerre who inherited it in the 1000th century. Around the year 3, the lord-bishops had fortifications built. These powerful walls, pierced by XNUMX gates, surrounded the town. They were located in line with the facades of rue Jacques-Amiot. Very wide and deep ditches filled with water protected the curtain walls. The fortifications were restored and completed in the XNUMXth century by powerful towers.
