Auguste Grasset Museum

In a completely refurbished museum, the oldest collection in the Nièvre presents objects illustrating the passion of the curious collector that was Auguste Grasset. Several coherent groups are articulated on three levels around the monumental contemporary hall where the equestrian Saint-Eustache, masterpiece of Nivernaise earthenware (1734), welcomes the visitor.
Antiquity is mainly represented by an Egyptian collection which neighbors, in the cellars of the museum, with a set ofarmes and ornaments from the South Pacific islands.
Upstairs, a chronological journey mixes works of art, sculptures and paintings from the Middle Ages to the pre-Impressionists.
The recent Salon de Musique unveils, in a subtle play of sound and light, some twenty curious instruments from the 17th to the 19th century, such as the ophicleide, the serinette, the tympanon or the pianoforte.
Finally, the second level presents the beautiful collection of earthenware from Nevers and Varzy, as well as a set of paintings by Nivernais landscape painters from the 19th century.
